ICONLOOP Showcases Hands-On Services That Bring the Practical Value of Blockchain Closer to Home
As the pilot operator for the Seoul Metropolitan Government's standard blockchain platform, ICONLOOP staged a solo demonstration of blockchain services so that attendees could experience first-hand the future Seoul that blockchain will bring. Over the course of the event, roughly 250 members of the public and blockchain industry figures visited the demonstration area, filling the venue. The services ran on ICON's testnet using IRC2 (a token standard based on the ICON platform) together with demo applications.
ICONLOOP demonstrated three blockchain services at the event: a "blockchain citizen ID," "blockchain voting," and "blockchain payments." The blockchain citizen ID is created by entering basic personal information. The next step, blockchain voting, is linked to the citizen ID so that voting proceeds only after the voter's identity is confirmed, and the tally was relayed in real time on a large display. The blockchain payment service lets participants use the cryptocurrency awarded for taking part in the vote to pay for goods: by scanning a product QR code at the on-site booth, visitors could buy items instantly without cash or a card.
"We prepared this promotion so that ordinary citizens could feel the practical value of blockchain technology more closely," said ICONLOOP CEO JH Kim. "Blockchain technology is meaningful in that it guarantees personal data sovereignty by letting citizens control the use of their own information, realizes direct democracy, and further stimulates local commerce and the non-profit sector in the form of local currencies."
Separately, in August ICONLOOP was selected as the pilot operator for the introduction of a standard blockchain platform under the 2018 Seoul Metropolitan Blockchain Pilot Project, commissioned by Seoul City Hall to innovate its administrative operations. The project is a follow-up to the Information Strategy Plan (ISP) for blockchain-based municipal innovation that Seoul carried out last year, and it covers the introduction of the city's standard blockchain platform, two flagship blockchain projects, and three proof-of-concept projects for delivering blockchain-based administrative services.
Over six months beginning in August 2018, ICONLOOP plans to apply loopchain, its in-house blockchain engine, to Seoul's standard blockchain platform, the M-Voting citizen voting service, and trust-building in used-car trading at Janganpyeong. At the same time, the company will develop smart contracts optimized for the administrative systems closest to citizens' daily lives, carrying out preliminary blockchain verification work on integrated citizen card authentication, consolidation of Seoul's mileage programs, and subcontract payment.
